Press Release | Model .012 by Guto Requena

May 26, 2017

Decimal is pleased to announce the launch of its model .012 designed by the Brazilian architect and designer Guto Requena. Highly in line with the Decimal philosophy, Guto incorporates digital design and manufacturing technologies to blur the line between design, engineering, and art. Also called Life Lamp, model .012 has three overlapping 3D printed volumes physically interconnected as a rhizome. Which combined with the soft high-CRI light of the Decimal LED module, create a beautiful glowing object resembling a heart. In the author’s own words:

Life Lamp was created to represent a life cycle. It is a sensible object composed of several layers and a unique shade that produces a complex image expressing the paths and surprises of our existence.

Three audio files were used in the programming of its generative design: The audio of a baby´s rapid heartbeat while still in the womb, the heartbeat of a 35-year-old and finally heartbeat of an elder of 80 years old. These data were used as parameters in software that drew them as lines of varied width and branching and that resulted in the lamp.
